JEEP WRANGLER TJ

The TJ (1997–2006) was the first coil-sprung Wrangler and it's a lifting favorite — simple, tough, and endlessly supported. The longer-wheelbase LJ Unlimited (2004–2006) uses some of its own parts, so note which you have.

Fitment

Most TJs run a Dana 30 front with a Dana 35 rear; the 2003–2006 Rubicon added Dana 44s and factory lockers. The 4.0L inline-six is the one to build. Above about 4 inches of lift you'll want a slip-yoke eliminator and a CV driveshaft to correct driveline angles and stop vibration.

Before you buy

A 3–4" lift clears 33s easily and opens the door to 35s with trimming. As the original coil Jeep, the TJ is death-wobble prone — a solid track bar, steering stabilizer, and alignment matter. The older Dana 35 rear is the weak link if you go big on tires.
