Bilstein vs King Shocks for 4Runner: Which Is Right for Your Build?

If you own a Toyota 4Runner and you're ready to upgrade your suspension, the two names you'll keep coming back to are Bilstein and King. Both have earned serious credibility on and off the trail. But they serve different builds, different budgets, and different drivers — and picking the wrong one means spending real money on performance you either can't use or that falls short of what you need.

At Underdog Motorsports, we're an authorized installer for both. Here's how we actually think about it when a customer comes in.

The Bilstein Lineup for 4Runner

Bilstein has three distinct tiers for the 4Runner, each built for a different use case and price point. Most shops talk about the 5100 and 6112. The 8112 is where the platform gets serious.

Entry Upgrade

Bilstein 5100

Works with your factory springs. Adjustable front ride height lets you level the 4Runner's factory rake and improve rebound control without touching the rest of your suspension. Best bang-for-buck upgrade on a daily-driven rig.

  • Adjustable front ride height
  • Uses factory springs — lower cost
  • Monotube design, no fade
  • Clean install, no major mods

Best for: leveling, daily driving, mild trail use

Mid-Range Performance

Bilstein 6112 / 5160

Full coilover up front with a 60mm digressive piston and up to 2.5" of lift. Pair it with 5160s in the rear and you've transformed how the 4Runner handles on road and off. Digressive valving cuts body roll and nose-dive significantly — this is what the older TRD Pros ran from the factory.

  • Up to 2.5" front lift
  • 60mm digressive piston
  • Dramatically reduced body roll
  • 5160 remote reservoir rears available

Best for: daily driver + weekend trails, most 4Runner builds

Top of the Line

Bilstein 8112 / 8100 ★

Bilstein's flagship 4Runner setup. The 8112 uses a unique triple-piston ZoneControl design with 3 compression zones and 2 rebound zones — engineered to feel planted on-road and composed at speed off-road without compromise. Pairs with 8100 remote reservoir rears. Up to 3.8" of front lift available.

  • Triple-piston ZoneControl technology
  • Up to 3.8" front lift
  • Built-in bottom-out control (no add-ons needed)
  • 60mm remote reservoir, aerospace billet components
  • Compatible with KDSS and non-KDSS

Best for: serious off-road, high-speed terrain, desert running, demanding builds

What makes the 8112 different from the 6112: The 8112's ZoneControl triple-piston design eliminates the need for separate hydraulic bump stops and limit straps. It's supple on small hits and firm on big ones — automatically. Blind shock testing comparing the full lineup put the 8112/8100 combo at the top of every category tested, including high-speed off-road composure, bottom-out control, and daily driving comfort. After all the testing, it's still difficult to find a setup that outperforms it on this chassis.

King Shocks 2.5 for 4Runner

King's 2.5 remote reservoir setup is a purpose-built performance shock. It's not primarily an on-road product with off-road capability — it's an off-road product that handles the commute fine. If your 4Runner is a real rig, King belongs in the conversation.

Heat Management

Remote reservoir delivers exceptional oil capacity and thermal stability. On long desert runs and repeated hard hits, King maintains consistent damping where smaller shocks start to fade.

High-Speed Performance

King's race-derived valving shines at speed over rough terrain — washboard roads, high-speed desert two-track, and repeated g-outs. Racing pedigree translated directly to the street truck market.

External Adjustability

More tuning range than any fixed-tune Bilstein option. Dial compression and rebound for your load, terrain, and driving style. Useful if your setup changes frequently between builds or trips.

The tradeoff: King costs more than all three Bilstein tiers. They also require more maintenance over time compared to Bilstein's sealed monotube designs. For pure high-speed desert performance, King is a benchmark. For a build that splits time between the trail and the school pickup line, the price premium is harder to justify.

Which Setup Is Right for Your Build?

Here's how we match 4Runner owners to the right tier at the shop.

Start Here

Bilstein 5100 — Level it and move on

You want to remove the factory rake, tighten up on-road feel, and run light trail duty. You're not going to Bulldog Canyon every weekend. Budget matters. This is the right call.

Most Popular Build

Bilstein 6112 / 5160 — The all-rounder

Daily driver that sees trails regularly. You want lift, better handling, and a setup that handles both worlds without compromise. This is our most-installed 4Runner suspension package — proven and dialed in.

Serious Builds

Bilstein 8112 / 8100 — The benchmark

You push your 4Runner hard. High-speed terrain, loaded overland trips, technical trails at pace. You want the best all-around suspension on this chassis without going full race setup. The 8112/8100 is it.

Dedicated Off-Road Rigs

King 2.5 — Purpose-built performance

Your 4Runner is a purpose-built trail or desert rig. You run it hard in demanding conditions frequently. You want external adjustability and maximum high-speed damping performance. Budget is secondary to performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between the 6112 and the 8112?

The 6112 uses a single digressive piston — excellent for daily driving and trail use. The 8112 uses a triple-piston ZoneControl design with 5 damping zones, a remote reservoir, and built-in bottom-out control. The 8112 is significantly more capable at speed and in demanding off-road conditions, but it's also a bigger investment.

Are King Shocks worth it over Bilstein 8112?

Depends on the build. The 8112/8100 combo tests extremely well and requires less maintenance than King over time. King's adjustability and high-speed desert performance are genuine advantages for dedicated off-road rigs. For most 4Runner owners — even serious ones — the 8112 is the stronger all-around value.

Do the 8112s work with KDSS?

Yes. Bilstein makes specific configurations for both KDSS-equipped and non-KDSS 4Runners. They are not compatible with X-REAS, Adaptive Variable Suspension, or factory rear air suspension. Confirm your build with us before ordering.
