Lexus GX470 & GX460 Suspension Guide: Build It Right in Mesa, AZ
The Lexus GX is one of the best-kept secrets in the off-road world — a body-on-frame Toyota underneath a luxury badge, sharing its bones with the Land Cruiser Prado and the 4Runner. That means it's genuinely capable and genuinely liftable. But the GX470 and GX460 are built differently from each other, and both have factory suspension quirks you need to plan around.
We build these platforms all the time and run them on our own trucks. Here's the honest breakdown, tier by tier, for both generations.

What's Specific About the Lexus GX
Both generations are truck-tough underneath — independent front, solid rear axle, real off-road hardware. The differences are in the details, and those details decide which parts go on your rig.
GX470 (2003–2009): torsion-bar front, air rear
The GX470 uses a torsion-bar front end rather than coil springs, so a small front level can be dialed in through the factory torsion adjustment. That's fine in moderation, but cranking torsion bars hard to fake a lift is exactly the kind of shortcut we won't do — it wears the front end and rides rough. For a real lift we spec proper front components. Out back, most GX470s ride on a factory rear air suspension that tends to fail with age.
GX460 (2010–2023): coil front, KDSS & AVS
The GX460 moved to a coil-spring front, which makes lifting more straightforward with coil-overs. The catch is the electronics: many GX460s have KDSS (a hydraulic sway-bar system) that must be properly loosened and re-centered during install, and the Luxury trim adds AVS adaptive dampers that don't simply swap for standard shocks. We account for both so nothing fights the new suspension.
The rear air suspension question
If your GX470's rear air bags are sagging, leaking, or throwing a light, you're not stuck. The most reliable long-term fix is converting the rear to a quality coil-spring or coil-over setup — it rides better, it won't strand you, and it plays nicely with a lift. It's one of the most common GX jobs we do.
Upper control arms past a point
Like every independent-front Toyota platform, the GX front geometry runs out of correction once you go far enough up — generally past about 2 to 3 inches. At that point aftermarket upper control arms restore proper alignment angles and protect the ball joints. Below that, factory arms are usually fine. We'll tell you honestly where your build lands.
GX470 & GX460 Suspension Options by Tier
A quick map of the setups we install most on the GX platforms, grouped by where they land. No prices here — the right build depends on your generation, whether you have air/KDSS/AVS, and what you do with the rig. Call us and we'll put a real number to it.
| Setup | Best For | Tier | UCAs Needed? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bilstein 5100 Shocks | Better damping and a modest lift on a budget | Entry | No (mild) |

Our Take on Each Setup
The honest version — what each of these is actually good at, and who we'd put it on.
Bilstein 5100 Entry
The sensible starting point for firmer control and a small lift.
Full breakdown
The 5100 is a proven monotube shock that wakes up a tired GX and supports a modest lift. On the GX460 it pairs with new coils; on the GX470 we pair it with a sensible front setup rather than over-cranking the torsion bars. It's our go-to for someone who wants a better ride and a little more clearance without a big spend.
Old Man Emu Value
Arguably the best value on the GX platform, and hugely popular for good reason.
Full breakdown
OME builds spring-and-shock packages specifically for the weight you're carrying, which is exactly what a loaded GX wants. Their light-duty setup rides beautifully as a daily; the medium-duty option is the answer once you've bolted on a bumper, a rear drawer system, and camping gear. It's the setup we recommend most for overland-minded GX owners who want proven comfort without going premium.
Bilstein 6112 Mid
The step up: a real coil-over front with selectable ride heights.
Full breakdown
Best suited to the coil-front GX460, the 6112 gives you a progressive-rate front spring and better heat capacity, paired with 5160 remote-reservoir rears. This is where the rig starts to feel genuinely composed on washboard and dirt roads. Near the top of its height range, plan on upper control arms so we can hold the alignment.
FOX & ICON Mid
Matched performance packages rather than a box of mismatched parts.
Full breakdown
FOX 2.0 coil-overs and ICON's staged kits both give you a firmer, more planted feel that still lives comfortably as a daily driver. ICON's higher stages include the tubular UCAs you'll want anyway at taller heights. These are favorites for GX owners who mix highway miles with forest roads and the occasional trail.
OME BP-51 Overland
The overlander's sweet spot: tunable bypass performance with real comfort.
Full breakdown
The BP-51 is a position-sensitive bypass shock with external adjustment, which means we can tune compression and rebound to how you actually load and drive the rig. For a GX that lives on long dirt roads and gravel with a full load, it's a fantastic balance of ride quality and control. We'd add UCAs on most of these builds.
ICON & King Reservoir Premium
For heat, speed, and rebuildable long-term ownership.
Full breakdown
Once you're running desert washes at speed, the extra oil capacity and rebuildability of 2.5-inch reservoir coil-overs earns its keep. ICON and King both make excellent, fully serviceable options — you rebuild them instead of replacing them. This is the top end for a GX that works hard off-road, and UCAs are part of the build.
Lexus GX Suspension FAQ
My GX470's rear air suspension is failing — what now?
You've got options, and the best long-term one is usually converting the rear to a quality coil or coil-over setup. It rides better, it won't leave you stranded on a leaking bag, and it works cleanly with a lift. It's one of the most common GX jobs we do — come talk to us before you spend money patching the old air system.
Does the GX460's KDSS complicate a lift?
It doesn't stop a lift, but it has to be done right. KDSS is a hydraulic sway-bar system, and if it isn't properly loosened and re-centered during the install you can end up with an uneven stance or a system that fights the new suspension. We handle KDSS the correct way every time.
What about the Luxury trim's AVS shocks?
The adaptive AVS dampers on some GX460 Luxury models can't simply be swapped for standard aftermarket shocks without addressing the electronics. Depending on your goals we'll either work within the system or convert to a conventional performance setup. Tell us your trim and we'll spec it correctly.
Do I need upper control arms after a lift?
Generally once you're past about 2 to 3 inches up front, yes. Aftermarket UCAs correct the front geometry, protect the ball joints, and let us pull the alignment back into spec. Below that, factory arms are usually fine. We'll be straight with you about which camp your build is in.
What tire size will fit my GX?
It depends on your lift height, wheel offset, and how much trimming you're comfortable with. A mild lift opens up a modest bump in tire size; a 2 to 3-inch setup with the right wheels gets you into noticeably larger meat. We'll match tire, wheel, and lift so you don't end up rubbing.
Is the alignment really included?
Every single install. A lift changes your front-end geometry, and driving it out of alignment burns tires and steers poorly. We align every rig that leaves the shop on a lift — it's not an upsell, it's part of doing the job right.
